How private can a Lake Bled wedding be?
Can you have a truly private wedding at Lake Bled, without tourists watching your ceremony or strangers walking through your celebration?
Yes, but not at every venue.
Lake Bled is one of Slovenia’s most visited destinations. Its island church, medieval castle and beautiful lakeside scenery attract visitors throughout the year, particularly during the summer wedding season.
What many international couples don’t realise when looking at wedding photographs is that some of the most recognisable wedding locations are also public spaces. An empty castle terrace in a photograph doesn’t necessarily show you what the same location will feel like during a busy afternoon.
If you are planning a private Lake Bled wedding, I encourage you to understand these differences before booking your venue. In my experience, two properties stand out when privacy is particularly important: Vila Bled for larger weddings and Vila Adora for smaller celebrations.
But first, it helps to understand what privacy actually means for your wedding.
What does a private Lake Bled wedding really mean?
When a couple tells me they want a private wedding, I always want to understand exactly what they have in mind.
For some, privacy means exchanging vows without tourists stopping to watch. For others, it means having their family and friends together in a beautiful property without meeting other hotel guests.
Some couples are perfectly comfortable celebrating at a popular location but prefer that their photographs, names and wedding details are never shared publicly.
These are different expectations, and they require different arrangements.
Before recommending a venue, I encourage couples to consider three questions:
- Who might be present during our ceremony? Will the space be exclusively ours, or can visitors stand nearby?
- Who will share the property during our celebration? Are the ceremony, dinner and reception areas reserved for our guests?
- How much personal privacy do we want? Are we comfortable with our wedding appearing on social media or suppliers’ websites?
A venue can feel secluded without offering exclusive use of every space. This distinction is especially important when planning from abroad, as you may be making decisions based on photographs and online descriptions.

Vila Bled
My first recommendation for private weddings with more than 30 guests
If you are planning a wedding with more than 30 guests, Vila Bled would be my first recommendation when privacy is a priority.
In my professional opinion, it offers the most private estate setting around Lake Bled for larger celebrations.
Vila Bled stands within extensive parkland beside the lake, away from the busiest parts of Bled’s promenade. Its position creates a sense of separation from the surrounding activity while allowing you to enjoy views of the lake and mountains.
One of Vila Bled’s greatest advantages is the possibility of keeping your celebration within one estate. Depending on your arrangements, you can hold the ceremony, drinks reception, dinner and evening celebration on the property.
For international couples, this is particularly valuable. Your guests may have travelled from several countries to celebrate with you. Keeping everything in one location gives them more time to enjoy the surroundings and one another.
It also means fewer transfers, less waiting and a more comfortable flow throughout the day.
What should you confirm before booking Vila Bled?
Although Vila Bled offers a secluded setting, there is an important difference between a private estate and exclusive use of an entire hotel.
Before confirming the venue, I would want to establish which areas of the property are reserved for your celebration, whether other hotel guests will be present and how the accommodation arrangements work.
I would also discuss the indoor alternative in case of rain, access for suppliers and any restrictions affecting the evening celebration.
These details are particularly important if your expectation is to spend the entire wedding day away from people who are not part of your celebration.
For a larger wedding where discretion, beautiful surroundings and a comfortable guest experience are priorities, Vila Bled remains at the top of my list.

A real wedding at Vila Bled: Dan and Mel
One of my couples, Dan and Mel, celebrated their wedding at Vila Bled after planning everything from abroad.
When they first contacted me, they knew very little about Slovenia and had an idea of the kind of wedding they wanted. Over the following nine months, we planned their celebration through video calls, discussing the venue, suppliers and the details that mattered to them.
In his Google review, Dan wrote:
“We’re so grateful for Petra, the other vendors, and Vila Bled.”
Dan Nettles | Google review
Their celebration included a welcome dinner and the wedding day itself.
What I appreciate about their review is the reminder that choosing a venue from another country involves much more than liking its photographs. Understanding how the location works, which suppliers to choose and how the different parts of the celebration fit together is just as important.
Dan and Mel’s experience also shows the value of working with someone who knows the destination and can explain what to expect before you arrive.
Vila Adora
My recommendation for smaller private weddings

For weddings with approximately 10 to 25 guests, Vila Adora is one of my favourite choices at Lake Bled.
Vila Adora offers a different atmosphere from Vila Bled. It feels more like an elegant lakeside residence than a grand estate. This makes it particularly appealing to couples who want a personal celebration.
When you invite only your closest family and friends, the scale of the venue matters. A space that feels beautiful with 70 guests may feel unnecessarily large with 15.
I particularly like the idea of organising a celebration where the preparations, ceremony and dinner take place within the same property, when the available arrangements allow it.
This creates a more relaxed experience, with less travelling between locations and more time together.
Privacy and the practical details at Vila Adora
There is one aspect I would pay particular attention to when planning a wedding at Vila Adora: the difference between the outdoor and indoor spaces.
The villa’s published arrangements accommodate up to approximately 30 people for outdoor dining, but the indoor dining space is more limited, with a stated capacity of 15.
For a wedding of 20 to 25 guests, a suitable rain plan is essential. I would want us to agree on a comfortable indoor alternative before confirming the venue.
Accommodation also needs careful consideration. Vila Adora has eight rooms and suites, with accommodation for approximately 20 guests, so not everyone attending a larger intimate celebration will necessarily be able to stay overnight.
If exclusive use of the villa is important to you, I would confirm the reservation conditions and exactly which spaces are included.
For a smaller wedding where you value a residential atmosphere, beautiful lakeside surroundings and time with your closest people, Vila Adora would be one of my first suggestions.

How private is a wedding on Bled Island?
Bled Island is one of the most recognised wedding locations in Slovenia.
Arriving by traditional pletna boat and climbing the 99 steps is a distinctive part of a Bled Island wedding. For couples planning a religious ceremony, the Church of the Assumption of Mary offers a meaningful setting.
However, there is something important you should know about privacy.
Only the church itself is private during the wedding ceremony. The rest of the island remains open to visitors.
During the religious wedding ceremony, the church closes to tourists, allowing you and your guests to attend without other visitors inside.
Outside the church, the situation is different. Tourists may be present when your boat arrives, while you walk up the steps or when you leave the church afterwards.
Exclusive private use of the entire island is not available for weddings.
Would I still recommend Bled Island?
Absolutely, for the right couple.
If a church ceremony is important to you, Bled Island offers a very special setting. But I would want you to understand the experience realistically before making your decision.
Your pletna journey takes place on a public lake, and other visitors may be around you during parts of the visit. Careful timing and well-organised boats can help the experience feel more comfortable, but they cannot make the entire island private.
If privacy is particularly important for the reception, I would consider holding the religious ceremony on the island and returning to a more secluded venue for dinner and the evening celebration.
That allows you to enjoy the tradition of Bled Island while keeping the rest of your wedding more personal.

Bled Castle
Beautiful views, but important privacy limitations
Bled Castle offers some of the most impressive views of Lake Bled. From its terraces, you can see the island, the lake and the surrounding mountains.
It is easy to understand why couples fall in love with this location when looking at photographs.
However, Bled Castle is a public visitor attraction, not a private wedding estate.
This is one of the most important differences I explain to couples considering a ceremony there.
Outdoor wedding ceremonies take place in areas that remain accessible to visitors. Although the ceremony area is separated, tourists may still be nearby, and a group of visitors can arrive during the ceremony.
Imagine exchanging your vows while tourists stand nearby. Some couples are comfortable with this because they love the views and historic setting.
For others, it would feel uncomfortable.
Neither preference is wrong, but I believe you should know what to expect before committing to the venue.
Why I recommend the Knights’ Hall for a more intimate ceremony
If you love Bled Castle but privacy is one of your priorities, the Knights’ Hall is the only ceremony location at the castle I would personally recommend for a more intimate experience.
It is an enclosed setting, away from the activity surrounding the outdoor ceremony areas. You exchange the panoramic view during your vows for a quieter, more protected atmosphere.
This may be the right compromise for a couple who loves the castle but doesn’t want tourists standing nearby during the ceremony.
The Knights’ Hall is still part of a public attraction, so it should not be confused with exclusive use of the entire castle.
For couples who prioritise complete seclusion, I would generally explore Vila Bled or Vila Adora before choosing an outdoor castle ceremony.
Is Hotel Štarkl suitable for a private wedding?
For smaller celebrations, generally up to approximately 25 guests, Hotel Štarkl is another venue I would consider.
Its lakeside location and proximity to the traditional pletna departure point can be particularly convenient if you are including Bled Island in your wedding plans.
However, Hotel Štarkl is a hotel and restaurant in an area visited by tourists. I would therefore approach the question of privacy differently than at Vila Bled or Vila Adora.
Before recommending it, I would check which ceremony and dining areas can be reserved exclusively. I would also confirm whether other hotel guests will be present and how the arrangements would work for your group.
It can be a very good option for couples who value the lakeside setting and convenient access to the island but do not necessarily require complete seclusion.
Privacy also matters during the wedding morning
Privacy isn’t only about where you exchange your vows. I also encourage couples to think carefully about the morning of the wedding.
You may want to spend those hours with your mother, sisters, closest friends or simply the people who make you feel comfortable. It is a personal part of the day, and I believe it deserves as much thought as the ceremony itself.

Hair and makeup professionals need enough space to work, photographers and videographers may arrive, flowers need to be delivered, and family members may want to visit.
Without a little planning, the morning can become unnecessarily busy.
If you and your partner are preparing separately, we need to plan where each of you will get ready. This is especially important if you don’t want to see one another before the ceremony.
I recommend deciding in advance who you genuinely want around you during preparations. You don’t need every wedding guest coming into your room that morning.
Sometimes separate preparation rooms are the most comfortable solution. In other cases, a villa with several suitable spaces works very well.
The aim is to give you enough room, time and privacy to enjoy the morning without unnecessary interruptions.
What happens to your wedding photographs afterwards?
There is another side of wedding privacy that has nothing to do with the venue.
Your photographs, videos and personal information.
Some couples are delighted to see their wedding published on Instagram, photographers’ websites or wedding blogs. Others prefer to keep the celebration entirely personal.
Both decisions should be respected.
If you prefer your wedding photographs to remain private, discuss this with your suppliers before signing their agreements. This includes your photographer, filmmaker, wedding planner and anyone else who may share images from your celebration.
Pay particular attention to contract clauses about social media, portfolio use and publication.
The same applies to sharing your names, wedding date or other identifying details.
A wedding can be organised in a very private setting, but that doesn’t automatically mean the photographs and information will remain confidential afterwards.
Clear communication in advance is essential.

Why discretion also matters during the wedding day
For me, discretion is not only about protecting personal information or choosing a secluded venue. It is also about how the wedding is managed.
Even with careful planning, things sometimes need to be adjusted during the day. Weather changes, suppliers may need instructions, or a decision has to be made while you are enjoying time with your guests.
Whenever possible, I prefer to handle these matters without unnecessarily involving the couple.
One of my brides, Eleanor Doubleday, described this in her Google review:
“We didn’t have to think about a thing, and if she needed our input she managed it discretely”
Eleanor Doubleday | Google review
Eleanor was referring to the way decisions were handled during her wedding.
I think this is an important part of a well-organised celebration. You should be able to enjoy your guests, your ceremony and the atmosphere without constantly being interrupted by operational questions.
A wedding planner’s work is not only about organising everything beforehand. It is also about making sure that the plans are carried out thoughtfully and calmly on the day itself.
My personal recommendation for a private Lake Bled wedding
When couples ask me where they can have a genuinely private wedding at Lake Bled, I usually begin with two properties.
Vila Bled, particularly for weddings with more than 30 guests, offers a secluded estate setting and the possibility of bringing different parts of the celebration together.
Vila Adora offers a more intimate, residential atmosphere for weddings of approximately 10 to 25 guests. I would recommend it when the dining arrangements and rain plan suit your group.
Bled Island and Bled Castle remain distinctive wedding locations, but they offer a different kind of experience. Both are public attractions, and neither should be presented as completely private.
The choice ultimately depends on what matters most to you.
Perhaps you love the tradition of arriving at Bled Island by boat and don’t mind visitors being present outside the church. Perhaps the view from Bled Castle is worth having a ceremony in a public setting.
Or perhaps you would prefer to spend the entire celebration at a secluded lakeside property, surrounded by your guests.
A private wedding is not necessarily a small wedding. You can have 70 guests in a more secluded environment than a couple exchanging vows with ten guests in a public courtyard.
What matters is choosing a venue, schedule and set of arrangements that support the experience you want.
And that is where I would always begin: not with the most beautiful photograph, but with an honest conversation about how you want your wedding day to feel.
If privacy is important to you, I would love to hear what you have in mind and help you find a setting where you can celebrate comfortably, surrounded by the people who matter most.
Get in touch to tell me a little about your plans.
With love,
Petra Starbek
